How I became a “legal expert” overnight and what it did to my practice and life

It’s Ask Alexis Anything month and so many of you have emailed in asking for more reveals about how I managed to write a bestselling book on legal planning, do all those TV experiences, build my practice to a million a year in revenue AND parent my kids, so in this message I’m letting you in on a big piece of it.

It’s a long post, but worth reading IF you are making good money in your law practice, but maxed out on time and don’t see a way to the next level … it’ll take about 15 minutes to read, but it could be the best 15 minutes you invest in ultimately freeing up your time without giving up your income to do it.

I was on a plane one day, reading Entrepreneur magazine, and I was looking for answers on how I could have a better law practice, free up my time, and make more money, you know all the typical things everyone in business for themselves wants to know.

money-1604921_1280  My law practice was doing well by anyone’s standards of success, bringing in $75,000-$120,000 per month each and every month. I was taking probably $25,000-$35,000 per month out of the business, though back then I wasn’t tracking or managing my finances properly, so it’s possible it was even more than that.

But I was seriously maxed out on my time — working in my office 40 hours a week with a full client load and a team to manage.

It was everything I had thought I wanted. But then I made it there and discovered that I actually wanted more. Not necessarily more money, but definitely more time.

The idea of going into my office 40 hours per week for the next twenty to thirty years (or more) made me want to die a little bit.

I had recently gotten divorced and I wanted the ability to work from home more so I could be there when my kids got home from school and I wanted to be able to travel when they were with their dad.

But I couldn’t figure out how any of that would be possible since I was already engaging pretty much all of the prospects I met with at the highest fees I could imagine anyone paying for my services and I was booked out 4-6 weeks.

And I couldn’t cut back my client load and make less money because I had child support and alimony to pay. It seemed freeing up my time would be impossible, if I wanted to keep living the lifestyle I had created for my family — living three houses from the beach, kids in private school, the whole thing.

I felt really stuck, and frustrated. But there was also a part of me that was annoyed with myself for feeling the way I did because I was “living the dream” of a full law practice, making great money.

It was all I had wanted for so long, and then I got it and I wasn’t happy. Mostly, I would beat myself up for not being grateful enough.

One day though, I was having one of those “maybe I should do something else” kind of moments that I often have right before a big breakthrough.

I was on a plane coming back from some sort of legal conference where I had met a bunch of other “successful” lawyers who also weren’t having the kind of lives I wanted to have and dreaming about quitting everything and taking my kids to live in Costa Rica, where we could just go to the beach and eat avocados all day, everyday.

Right about then, I came across an article  that said something like you can create additional revenue streams and free up your time by leveraging your knowledge beyond just seeing clients 1:1 if you create digital products and sell them online.

It seemed to be the exact solution I had been seeking.

Suddenly, my mind was racing with tons of ideas.

I loved the idea of additional revenue streams that didn’t count on me going into my office and meeting with clients 1:1.

I loved the idea of leveraging my knowledge and creating products that I could make once and sell to many.

I love the idea of having part of my business be online so that if I ever did really decide to take my kids and move to Costa Rica (or anywhere else for that matter), I could still serve people and earn a living.

winning-1529402_1280It sounded like a whole lot of freedom to me.

As soon as I landed, I began to devour everything I could about how to do this. I was hooked.

Fast forward a couple years and thanks to what I learned about how to create digital products, I had systematized every part of my law practice and trained other lawyers to start engaging clients in my office so I could focus more on the business aspect of the practice, which I could do from home while the lawyers I trained met with and served the clients.

Then, with the time I freed up, I wrote the best-selling book on legal planning for parents and within weeks of getting it published, I began getting calls from all across the US to appear on television talking about the book. And, the best part was, I had plenty of time to travel and be on all the shows.

I became an overnight legal expert. Fox News, The Today Show, Good Morning America, many of the local morning news shows, and I even became the regular Family, Financial and Legal Expert on Better TV.

And, yes, I created additional revenue streams selling my digital products online so that eventually I decided not to see clients in my office at all, and I sold my law practice altogether. What happened after that, why selling my law practice was a terrible decision and what I should have done instead are stories for another day.

For today, if you also love the idea of leveraging your knowledge and expertise into creating digital products you can sell online, I’d love to share with you the first step.

First and foremost, you must find your “Big Idea.”  bulb-40701_1280

I actually screwed this one up in the beginning. And it cost me about $50,000 and around 6 months until I found someone who had already done what I wanted to do to take me by the hand and get me straightened out.

You don’t have to go down that long road to doing it all wrong, the way I did, because I’m going to introduce you to the very best person I know to hold your hand through this process.

His name is Eben Pagan and he’s sold over 100 million dollars of Digital Products online. Yes, $100 million dollars. Crazy, right?

And he’s created a really cool free training called: “How To Find YOUR Big Idea”.

Here’s where you can get it.

I just went to check it out myself (because even though I’ve been doing it a long time, I still love learning from Eben whenever he comes out with something new), and saw that Eben’s not only giving you the training on How to Find Your Big Idea, but also three trainings on how to actually create a digital product — he’s giving you a book, a blueprint, and a class — all on How to Create a Digital Product.

I think I probably paid at least a few thousand dollars to learn this back in the beginning of my journey and then did it wrong because I wasn’t learning from Eben, who makes it so easy and clear. Now, you get to skip all my heartache and mistakes I made along the way and learn from the best, for free.

Just go here and put in your email to get the PDF, the book, the blueprint and the class.

After you check it all out, I’d love to know in the comments below … what is the first digital product you are going to create?
